My VW Camper Bay Window video

VW campers that ere thirty years old can have serious rust. This is a cautionary tale with graphic illustrations of the rust horrors you may find. When you’re buying a bay window camper, or even a vw t25, get underneath with a torch, check for rust on the chassis, floor pan, bottom six inches or so of the body, round the wirndows and along the gutter.

Take a good lok at this video before you look at VW camper to buy. If you’ve already got one with more rust than you initially thought - this should help!

lol, there’s plenty out there that need restoring so you will be spoilt for choice :) the hardest thing is convincing your parents, i started by buying a beetle when i was 16 and doing jobs like replacing wings & tidying up where it was rusty until i passed my test

  4. Great project and …
Great project and what a fantastic job you all made! Nice colour too! I’m at the stage where my 73 is now pretty much as I would like it (after spending over £3000 at my local body shop over the last 3 or so years). I can’t complain though - it’s been drivable so I could use it in between visits to the body shop. Hope you have loads of fun in yours!

Thanks fella! I’ve just got back from Cornwall Jamboree and VW Action and I’m going to Vanfest in a couple of weeks so if you spot me come over and have a beer!
I would have spent the same as you if my girlfriend’s Dad hadn’t done the welding and spraying.
If you have any pics of yours it would be cool to see them.

  8. Completely awesome. …
Completely awesome. Well done you! I bought a 1976 bay on the dreaded ebay for £950. I dropped it off at a garage to get a cheap MOT etc. It’s been there 3 years now. I’ve had 2 kids in the time it’s been there! It’s finally ready to come out but I’m 20k lighter…. (Ouch!!). If you’re going to any of the shows I’ll look you out. Great job, you’ve put my lazy arse to shame. Jibber.

could well be very helpfull yeah, i’ll check my boxes and look over the state of mine, i know the rear bumper it’s self was shot, also hard to find! van is stripped to bare shell at the min (apart from paint, have also been keeping photograph diary so will put a video response of how it’s going. Just like to say to whoever is thinking of doing this that it’s no walk in the park!! it takes money, commitment and 00’s of hours, this really is an achievment. u manage to find a dash clock yet ?

  10. Yeah mine’s a 72 …
Yeah mine’s a 72 too, a crossover bay. I have some rear bumper brackets somewhere if you need them, they are really hard to come by as they are 6-month only production.
When we were doing mine it was when we had all the floods up here which stopped work for at least a month. Hopefully it picks up for you, and glad it has inspired you :)

Nice one, yours is an even earlier one then and will have the small rear lights. At least if it’s solid you can personalise the paintjob or interior if you wish.
Good look with yours! Yeah I’d like to see the look on the previous owner’s face if he saw it now!

  13. GREAT Job! I just …
GREAT Job! I just got a 70 Camper and I was very, very lucky. the frame is in very good condition. Most of the time when you buy any VW here in New Jersey they look like your bus looked. Its a lot of work but it makes you feal good that you brought it back to life. Good luck with it, well done.

  14. The only thing when …
The only thing when you buy an already restored one is that you don’t know how good it is under the paint. Filler and make a camper look great, until it starts rusting underneath or cracking.
It’ll be worth it when it’s done just stick at it, good luck with yours!

  15. Pretty familiar …
    Pretty familiar stuff.
Mine was like this but it’s just about ready to be painted at last.
My advice would be to buy an already restored one.
Mine looked not-too-bad but it was absolutely rotten.
    Five hundred pounds it cost.
Add three grand to that and it will be up to scratch which is pretty good I suppose.
    It had better be fun.
